INTO SANTIAGO Latin cab drivers have a reputation. A valid one, as I found out.

CORDILLERA BLANCA On any given day in Southern Peru, over 600 people hike the 40-mile Inca Trail. Hundreds more take day hikes from the Machu Picchu terminus of the trail. Yet in Northern Peru, only a few hundred attempt the Cordillera Blanca trek in a year. You want ruins, go to Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail. You want Andean Peru without the tourists, try Cordillera Blanca or Cordillera Huawash. I did, and it was one of the best walks I've ever made. Hanging icefields, classic climbing peaks, rural Peru at its most innocent, and as much as a 100 miles of walking at over 12,000 feet await you.
